The Difference Between Marketing & Advertising
Think of it this way: all whales live in the ocean, but not all fish are whales.
Stick with me. This will make sense in a second.
When someone says “fish,” they could mean tuna, salmon, goldfish, or a whale, right? Well… not really. Whales aren’t actually fish, even though they live in the same environment and very closely resemble one. But you can see how easy it is to lump them together.
Marketing and advertising work the same way.
Advertising is just one part of a much larger marketing ecosystem. Marketing is the strategy that guides how a business presents, positions, and sells itself. Advertising is simply one tool used to carry out that strategy.
So What Is Marketing, Really?
Marketing is everything a business does to understand customers, shape perception, and drive revenue. It covers product design, pricing, distribution, brand messaging, and yes, promotion through advertising.
To simplify it, marketers break it down into the Four P’s:
- Product
- Price
- Place
- Promotion
Let’s take a closer look.
1. Product
This is what you sell, whether that’s artisan bread, landscaping services, or luxury travel packages. But it’s more than just the product itself.
Marketers ask:
- What makes this special?
- Why should someone care?
- How does it stand out?
From features and packaging to functionality and storytelling, the product piece of marketing shapes the entire customer experience.

2. Price
Price isn’t just what it costs. It’s a positioning decision.
Marketers evaluate:
- How does this compare to other options in the market?
- Is it a high-end product or a value buy?
- What does the price say about the brand?
Pricing influences how your audience sees your product, and whether they think it’s worth it.
3. Place
Place is all about where and how you sell your product or service:
- Online store? Physical retail?
- Exclusive boutique? Mass-market platform?
It also includes how it’s presented. Are you showcasing your offer front and center or behind the scenes for a more premium feel? Place is both logistical and strategic.

4. Promotion
This is where advertising lives.
Promotion includes all the ways you get your message out:
- Public relations, like press coverage, partnerships, and event visibility
- Advertising, such as digital ads, print media, TV, and billboards
- Email campaigns, social media content, influencer collaborations
Advertising’s job is to amplify your message and generate action, but it only works well if it’s built on a solid marketing strategy.
So, What’s the Bottom Line?
Marketing is the ocean. Advertising is just one whale in it… And your business lives on fish.
You don’t advertise instead of marketing. You advertise as part of a broader marketing strategy. If your ads aren’t working, the issue might not be the ads. It might be the lack of foundational marketing behind them.
